Completed by 1925, the Cecil Memorial Chapel was part of a large system of Episcopal Missions that had been established throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains by Archdeacon Frederick W. Neve, beginning in the early 1900s. The stone chapel was the second place of worship on the site, having replaced an earlier frame structure that the community had outgrown.
Without access to funding for the mission, people from the surrounding community volunteered to haul rocks for the construction of a larger chapel. Local stonemason, Jason Knight, constructed the walls of the Cecil Chapel. The stone church included stained glass windows, a tower with a belfry and meeting space, and a small portico at its entrance.
The first service was held on December 1, 1925 and the church was able to accommodate 100 people.
